Donaldson wins, Spencer tops CCM field

9-26-09 What the Capital City Midgets lacked in car count they made up in enthusiasm at Petaluma Speedway. The group with was missing a couple of regulars (Lyon and Land) was joined by BCRA midget Mike Donaldson who came out to help with car counts for the young CCM group.

In the first heat race, Dillon Silverman showed how effective the RRE Chevy EcoTec could be against the full midget of Donaldson, leading 7 of 8 laps. On the final lap of the heat, Silverman lost power steering sending him high and allowing Donaldson to slip by.

The highlight of our night, was the arrival of Lonny Alton after our heat race was over. Lonny spent Friday night installing a new engine into his car, only to find out on Saturday morning that the front seal was bad and oil was blowing out all over the floor of his shop. In typical fashion Lonny would not be denied and worked all day to repair the engine finally leaving his house at 4:30 to make the 2 ½ hour drive to Petaluma to race. Wow that is commitment.

Silverman jumped out to an early lead, only to be passed by Donaldson on the 2nd lap when his power steering line failed again. Donaldson was fully in command followed by Spencer, Young and Alton. As Youngs car sputtered, Alton ran him down making a last lap pass to take 4th.

Both Donaldson and Spencer were awarded the coveted Capital City Midgets Main Event Winner Flag.

The night was capped off by the Ice Cream Social sponsored by race promoter Jim Soares. Jim really knows how to thank the drivers, pit crews and raceway staff. There might not be a better promoter in the country (no offense Alan, Rick or Dan, we love all of you).
